Alan Sims, from Mobile, Alabama, began his professional career as a counselor after obtaining graduate degrees from the University of Florida. Moving to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1982, he worked as a counselor, primarily in public schools, until 2001 when, after obtaining an MS in Information Science from UT, he became a librarian for the remainder of his professional career.

Alan and his wife, Karen, moved to downtown Knoxville in 2009, and noticing a lack of online information about the city, Alan started at the blog and website, InsideofKnoxville.com, in 2010. It grew rapidly in readership, began receiving ads from local businesses, and in 2014, Alan retired from his public school career in order to devote full time to his passion for downtown Knoxville.
