Kuumba Kamp is a component of the African American Appalachian Arts, Inc., Kuumba Watoto Urban Youth Institute. KUUMBA WATOTO means “Creative Children” (from the language of Ki- Swahili). Kuumba Kamp offers intensive workshops that focus on the development of performance skills, knowledge of African and African American culture. The Kuumba Kamp serves youth who are school aged from 5 to 18 years old. Self-discipline, proper nutrition and individual goal setting are life skills that are reinforced during the camp. Our purpose is to provide a supportive environment that facilitates the development of the individual physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Camp tuition is $140 per child. During the last week, camp participants will take part in a celebration “Seeding a Garden in the Mind”: Graduation & African Naming Ceremony which will be held on Thursday, June 21, 6-8 PM at Haley Heritage Square/Morningside Park to Kick-off the Annual Kuumba Festival events. Also, youth will be able to showcase what they learned at the 29th Annual Kuumba Festival which will be held on Friday, June 22, 12-10 PM at Market Square.
